BELC member coordinates European Quiz for voters in Germany’s Wesel

In an effort to make young people aware of and participate in the upcoming European elections, the Hanseatic city of Wesel in Germany created a special quiz, which was promoted by the Youth Council. At the spring festival in early April, BELC member and Wesel’s local councillor, Marcel Schoierer handed out the quiz - together with Thomas Voigt of the Wesel Youth Council, and municipal employees.

This was part of the #LetsEurope campaign of the Ruhr Regional Association (RVR) and cities and municipalities of the Rhine-Ruhr region in Germany for the European elections in June 2024.

In glorious sunshine, visitors of the spring festival were asked to answer five questions about the European Union. Questions included for instance how many gold stars are on the European flag. Completed quizzes could be placed in a “ballot box”, which would also enter them into a prize draw. In addition to answering questions, people at the Europe stand discussed advantages of a united Europe. Many emphasised that the EU's values brought peace after the two world wars. Others cited the advantages of free travel within the Schengen area and the euro as a currency.

Several hundred million people in Europe are being called upon to elect a new European Parliament in June this year. In Germany, elections will take place on 9 June, and the participation of young people is particularly important.
