A bike tour and a show about Europe in the Belgian town of Ostend

On 9 May, the Belgian partner town of Ostend celebrated Europe Day, symbolising peace and unity. This year, the municipality invited its citizens to take part in two activities: a cycling tour during the day and a show in the evening.

Silke Beirens, BELC member from Ostend spoke at the opening of the festivities, explaining her role within BELC to participants, emphasising the importance of the connection to a European local councillors’ network and all its benefits for the town. She also reminded of the struggle our parents and grandparents went through to bring freedom and democracy, and that it is important to remember this almost 80 years after the end of the Second World War.

“Head to Europe” cycling tour

Cyclists took part in a 20-kilometre ride that highlighted European projects on maritime heritage and showcased Europe’s impact on Ostend and the surrounding area. The tour’s organisers included the Europe Direct centre in West Flanders, the VIVES University College and the city of Ostend.

Cyclists stopped along the way to view EU-funded projects such as Mission Ocean, the Flemish Marine Institute, Bluebridge - the Ostend Science Park, urban habitats and the Maritime Rescue and Coordination Centre. Ms. Beirens informed citizens that European funding has transformed the whole city, from Raversijde (on the western end) to Oosteroever (on the eastern end). The bicycle tour ended with a drink and a local shrimp croquette as well as a local choir singing the European hymn.

“This is Europa” performance

In the evening, a performance, titled This is Europa by Hendrik Vos and Frans Grapperhaus entertained citizens. In this show, writer and director Hendrik Vos recounted the heroism that led to great dreams and deeds. The humorous, musical and captivating performance received a standing ovation at the end of the day.
