Dubrovnik engaged in successful underwater cleanup

In celebration of World Cleanup Day, BELC partner municipality, Dubrovnik organised an underwater cleanup in Zaton, a village within the city’s administrative region on 21 September, 2024. The event, as part of the city's ongoing environmental initiatives, was led by the Administrative Department for Urbanism, Spatial Planning, and Environmental Protection and took place as part of the wider EU Beach Cleanup initiative. It is organised by the EU in partnership with the United Nations and aims to raise awareness about marine pollution and how our daily habits impact the ocean. 

The results of the Zaton cleanup were remarkable—over half a ton of glass, metal, plastic waste, and car tires were removed from a relatively small section of the seabed. Around 20 volunteers, including divers from the Dubrovnik Diving Club, participated, making a noticeable impact on the local marine environment. 

This initiative, driven by a letter of intent signed by Mayor Mato Franković, a member of the BELC network, is part of Dubrovnik's broader efforts to maintain a cleaner seabed for the benefit of both residents and visitors. 

The Department of Urbanism, Spatial Planning, and Environmental Protection of the City of Dubrovnik extends its thanks to all participants, volunteers, and Čistoća Dubrovnik for their contributions. 

By organising such actions, Dubrovnik demonstrates how local governments can effectively engage communities in taking concrete steps toward environmental protection and the fight against marine pollution.
