Estonian BELC member from Kohtla-Järve took part in European elections event organised by Europe Direct Jõhvi Information Center

Anton Dijev, Estonian BELC member and city councilllor of Kohtla-Järve, attended the European Parliament Candidates’ Debate on May 9, 2024, held at the Tallinn University of Technology, Virumaa College. The event was organised by Europe Direct Jõhvi Information Center; the Representation of the European Commission in Estonia; Kohtla-Järve City; TalTech Virumaa College; the Estonian NATO Association; and the newspaper Põhjarannik.

Representatives from the parties participating in the upcoming European Parliament elections attended this event. Debated topics included, among others, climate change challenges, security issues, migration policy in the European Union and the role of the European Union in regional development. Attendees also had the opportunity to ask questions.

Mr. Dijev stated, “In order for [local politicians] to continue developing our hometown, country and the entire European Union, it is important to actively participate in the European Parliament elections.” He also emphasised the importance of young people voting in the elections and that they can be informed about the candidates by watching the debates. 

Local media also covered the event, quoting the BELC member. There were articles in Põhjarannik, the most significant local media outlet for Ida-Virumaa, a primary information source in the region, as well as in Severnoje Poberezhje its Russian edition.
