EU talk for students in Spain’s San Xoán de Río

In April 2024, José Miguel Pérez, BELC member and local councilor of San Xoán de Río organised a discussion aimed at young people in his municipality. The objective was to inform the youth about the importance of the European Elections in 2024, as well as the functioning of the EU as a whole.

The event was organized on 4 April, when the local councillor guided Mr. Perez in the town hall of San Xoán de Río and then the local high school of Trives, where the EC official was greeted by the management of the institution. The EU official talked with students, who raised various topics, such as the EU response to COVID 19, the EU’s role in the world, the EU’s agricultural policy, day-to-day work at the Commission, how the EU deals with the different EU languages, as well as the selection process of working at EU institutions.

The audience of nearly a hundred young people was made up of mostly upper secondary school students, most of them above 18 (which is the voting age in Spain) and showed great interest in the elections to the European Parliament. They also valued how the talk was given in Galician, the favoured language in the region.
