Europe Day celebrations in Latvian BELC partner municipality of Rezekne

Rita Terauda, Rezekne City’s BELC representative participated at an event on 8 May 2024, as part of the Europe Day celebrations. It was held in Rezekne and she was supported by Europe Direct Austrumlatgale, border guards, home guard veterans, and employees of Rezekne municipality.

The event was in celebration of Europe and particularly the 20th anniversary of Latvia’s membership in the European Union. During the event, Ukrainians who live in Rezekne gave a concert in appreciation for the support the EU has given to Ukraine.

Looking back at the progress since joining the European Union in 2004, Ms. Terauda emphasised that the contribution of the European Union to the development of the region has been very important.

Inta Rimsane, Manager of Europe Direct Austrumlatgale, said: “Over 20 years more than 20 million euros have been invested in various European Union projects in Rezekne. Roads, schools, cultural centres, agrigulture, tourist attractions – this list could be longer. In addition, the opening of EU borders has allowed residents of Rezekne – representatives of different professions as well as pupils – to visit Greece, France, Netherlands, Malta, Cyprus, Ireland, Poland, Spain, Norway, Sweden and elsewhere.”
