Greece’s Ilion municipality celebrated Fascination of Plants Day to promote a greener and more resilient Europe

Under the auspices of the BELC network, Greece’s Ilion municipality celebrated the 7th International Fascination of Plants Day on 31st of May 2024. It was organised - in collaboration with the University of Peloponnese - as a planting event for bee conservation to showcase the critical role plants play in everyday life.

The event, during which more than 70 students of primary education gathered, centered on the importance of aromatic plants for the preservation of bee population. The informative sessions educated participants about the crucial role bees play in pollination of agricultural crops. The pollution of crops and wild flora is provided mainly by honeybees and they are necessary for the maintenance of a functioning ecosystem.

“A greener and more sustainable Europe is an existential need both for us and the generations to come. In the context of our participation in the European Mission Adaptation to Climate Change, as well as the BELC network, and ahead of the upcoming European elections, we undertake a series of initiatives to raise public awareness and to increase environmental consciousness among youngsters, who are the future European citizens,” stated Dimitrios Koukouvinos, BELC member from Ilion’s municipality and president of the municipal council.
