The visit to Brussels in which BELC member Mr. Xavier Aldeguer, deputy mayor of Girona took part in February 2024, was reported by local Catalan media. In the article published by Diari de Girona, the network’s purpose of connecting the EU with local authorities was explained, as well as the relevant topics it encourages to address, such as European funds, the energy crisis, and the overall democratic processes.
The article announced and highlighted the involvement of the city in the BELC project and included a quote by the deputy mayor. Mr. Aldeguer commented on the importance of “bringing European policies closer to the needs of municipalities and finding points of connection between different institutions to understand strategies and political priorities”. The deputy mayor also added that “municipalities must stop being passive members who merely observe European policies and funding, and instead become involved in areas where they can influence with proposals that provide solutions to common needs”.
Local media reporting about BELC’s activities and purpose allows the general public in each country to gain insight into the network. Hence, people are more informed about European matters, paving the way for a better awareness of the impact the EU has in their lives.
