For the European Week of Sports, the local council of Għargħur, a village in the northern region of Malta, hosted ‘Għargħur European Week of Sports 2024’. This event celebrated the European Week of Sports in Malta, whereby various sports activities were held over eight days between 23- 30 September 2024, with the culmination of the 5k fun run.
The concept of the European Week of Sports aligns with the broader initiative, encouraged by the European Commission to promote physical activity and sports across Member States. It also showcased Malta’s commitment to integrating European ideals into local traditions, reinforcing the importance of community engagement in sports.
A total of 19 activities were available for the village of close to 3,000 inhabitants, to ensure there was something suitable for everyone with challenges varying from competitive running, fitness classes, pool games, and football tournaments. The event attracted over 150 participants, raising more awareness about European values whilst highlighting the spirit and enthusiasm for sports within the community.
Drawing attention to the importance of sports for health, well-being, and social cohesion, this event went a step further as it also raised funds for Puttinu Cares, a local non-governmental organisation, assisting cancer patients in their treatment and recovery process. In total the event managed to raise close to €2,053 for a meaningful cause.
