On 1 May, an information and event campaign was organised in the German town of Ginsheim-Gustavsburg to raise public awareness of the European elections. Participants took part in a picnic, allowing numerous city councillors, among them BELC-member Anja Nillius, to use the opportunity to promote Europe and the message was clear: inviting citizens to go to the polls on 9 June.
Ms Nillius explained that the older generation would definitely go to the polls, while younger people often showed a lack of interest and criticised the EU. As a BELC representative, one of her tasks is to familiarise citizens of her city with the complicated structure of Europe at informative events like this picnic that the local media also covered.
