Montilla City Council, represented by member of the EU Local Councillors, Rafael Ángel Llamas, supported sustainable urban mobility by organising a series of initiatives during European Mobility Week between 16-22 September, 2024.
Throughout the week, local officials held activities aimed at raising awareness of the health and environmental benefits of sustainable transportation, such as cycling, walking, and taking public transport. These events were designed to encourage residents to adopt these eco-friendly travel options in their everyday life and thus helping not only to reduce the city’s carbon footprint, but promote a healthier urban environment.
Montilla’s Mobility Week activities included both educational and community-focused events. On 19 September, the town hosted a Bike Road Safety Circuit in collaboration with Fundación Mapfre, offering safety training for school groups in the morning and opening the event to the general public in the afternoon. On 22 September, the community came together for a 15-kilometer family bike ride through Montilla. For a small registration fee, participants received insurance coverage, a commemorative T-shirt, and refreshments, making it a highly inclusive, family-friendly event.
Montilla’s commitment to sustainable transportation extended beyond the week’s events. The city launched infrastructure projects to improve walkability and cycling options, including widening sidewalks and expanding bike lanes. Additionally, it maintained free public transport with numerous stops available throughout the day. These improvements reflect Montilla’s long-term dedication to fostering an accessible, eco-friendly urban space aligned with European mobility goals.
