The youth’s vital role in the future plans of the EU – event in Spain

Newspaper clipping titled: Young people from Trives analysed their role in the EU. The Trives institute hosted a conference on "Europeanism and rural development"

On 13 September, 2023 the municipality of San Xoán de Río, Galicia (Spain), a BELC partner, held the screening State of the Union (SOTEU) speech by Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission. The local council, Concello de San Xoan de Río, broadcasted the speech for residents and visitors to watch it in full. This activity was organised in collaboration with the Europe Direct centre of the Lugo’s Concello, that aims to promote the European Union in the region.

After the screening, a roundtable session took place in the neighbouring village of Puebla de Trives. The discussion, titled ‘Youth in the European Union’, explored the role that this age group plays in the present and future plans of the EU. Initiatives such as volunteering and internship programmes, as well as study and work abroad ideas, were part of the youth-focused conversation, that also touched upon various upcoming projects led by the young generation.

As a whole, this collaboration between the municipalities and the Europe Direct centre aimed to bring opportunities within the EU closer to young people living in rural areas. As stated by the EC President during her SOTEU speech, history is now calling to complete a Union where young people can live, study and work in freedom. Employment and education are some of the most pressing issues.
